Importance of Makar Sankranti- The Great Indian Festival- Celebrated in All India with different Names-

 Makarsankranti is the festival which is celebrated on first day of makra maas which is 14 January usually but in leap year it becomes 15th January always. Makarsankranti is also known as Uttarayan and in India this festival has its historical importance and significance.



It is believed that on Makarsankranti Lord Sun went to meet his Son Lord Shani at his house. As Shani lord is the lord of Capricorn this day is known as Makarsankranti. Makarsankranti is the end of the winter season and beginning of the harvest season. On this auspicious day sun enters into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. 



Makar Sankranti is the date from which the northward movement of the sun begins. The period from Karka Sankranti to Makar Sankranti is known as the Dakshinayan.



Makarsankranti is known as Pongal in Southern part of India, Khichadi or festival of donation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Festival of Kites or Uttarayan in Gujrat, Makarsankranti in Bengal region, Maghi in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Sheshur Senkrant in Jammu Kashmir. 


This festival is also known as festival of donation as in whole India at different region people donate like in Maharashtra, Women donate cotton, oil, sughain to the other married women. In Bengal people donates til whereas in Bihar people donates urad, rice, gold, woollen clothes, blankets, etc.
